In ancient Greece, “showing the fig” was a vulgar hand gesture, and Sykophantes means “one who shows the fig”. Earthy and full of dark fruit flavor from hundreds of pounds of figs and dark candy syrup, but with a sourness that cuts the gentle sweetness, Sykophantes is our fall beer.

Just as the Serpent Bite and loss of Eurydice was the catalyst for Orpheus’s journey, our love for hops and sour beers was the catalyst for Orpheus Brewing. Serpent Bite is a dry-hopped, sour mash saison, with a tart bite, and notes of orange and tropical fruit.

After the fateful serpent bite which killed his wife, Eurydice, Orpheus spent years wandering the earth in mourning. His sad songs eventually moved a stone and opened the entrance to the underworld, where he journeyed down to Hades in search of her.

In the heroine Atalanta, we see the traits of what we aim for in all of our beers: piquant, deceptively robust, and a bit wild. A tart plum saison, Atalanta tastes of plums intermingling with spicy yeast, and a refreshing tartness that makes Atalanta as good for pairing with food as by itself.
